What Is Post-Construction Cleaning — and Why Can't My Regular Cleaner Do It?

Post-construction cleaning removes what builders leave behind — fine drywall and silica dust in every crevice, paint overspray, adhesive residue, and debris — using staged passes (rough, dust settlement, final detail) and equipment built for construction dust. It's a specialty service; a standard house cleaning isn't designed for it.
The contractors are gone, the renovation looks finished — and then you run a hand along a shelf and it comes back white. Construction isn't over when the builders leave; it's over when the dust is gone. That takes a different kind of cleaning.
Why construction dust is different
Drywall sanding, tile cutting, and concrete work produce ultra-fine mineral dust that behaves nothing like household dust. It hangs in the air for days, settles in waves (clean a surface today and it's coated again tomorrow), works into cabinet hinges, window tracks, vents, and light fixtures, and clogs ordinary vacuums. Wiped with the wrong cloth or product, it smears into a haze on glass and scratches soft finishes.
What post-construction cleaning includes
- Debris and residue removal — stickers and film off new windows and appliances, paint overspray, adhesive and grout haze
- Top-down dust extraction — ceilings, fans, vents, ledges, trim, and walls before anything at counter height, with HEPA-filtered equipment that captures fine dust instead of recirculating it
- Every cavity opened — inside cabinets, drawers, closets, and appliances, where dust infiltrated during the work
- Window and track detail — often the dustiest spot in the whole project
- Floor care by material — fine grit is abrasive, so floors are vacuumed thoroughly before any wet mopping to avoid scratching new surfaces
- Final detail pass after the dust has fully settled — the difference between "looks clean today" and "stays clean"
When to schedule it
After the last trade is done — painters, flooring, punch-list repairs — and before furniture and belongings move in. Dust that settles into an empty room wipes away; dust that settles into a furnished one lives in your upholstery for months. Renovating to sell? Pair it with a pre-listing clean.
